Day 1 — Saturday

Tortola to Norman Island

Board in Tortola and set sail for Norman Island — the historic inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson’s ‘Treasure Island’. Snorkel the famous Caves at Treasure Point in Privateer Bay, taking an underwater torch to get a closer look at the mysterious markings on the cave walls. The Bight offers scenic hiking trails for those wanting to stretch their legs ashore. Spend the night moored in the Bight and swim or dinghy over to Willy T’s floating bar and restaurant for a lively first night afloat. For something a little more sedate, try Pirates Bight restaurant on the beach — but be sure to swing by Willy T’s for at least one drink.

Day 2 — Sunday

Cooper Island

En route to Cooper Island, stop at The Indians — four rocky pinnacles that rise 50 feet out of the water with a cornucopia of aquatic life below. Look out for turtles, reef fish, plenty of colourful coral and even an underwater tunnel. A short hop south, the Wreck of the RMS Rhone off Salt Island is one of the Caribbean’s most celebrated dive sites, lost against the rocks in the hurricane of 1867. Cooper Island itself is made for an unhurried afternoon of snorkelling, hiking and beachcombing. Lunch at the Cooper Island Beach Club — their curried chicken rotis, jerk pork tenderloin and basil-butter-drizzled mahimahi are exceptional — and stay late at the Rum Bar next door, which keeps more than a thousand rums on its shelves.

Day 3 — Monday

Virgin Gorda & The Baths

Set sail to the unmissable Baths on Virgin Gorda. The area is perfect for swimming and snorkelling, but the coolest part is the trail through the Caves to Devil’s Bay. During the 20-minute trek you’ll clamber over boulders, slosh through tidal pools, squeeze into impossibly narrow passages, then drop onto a sugar-sand beach. Anchor for the night at Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour in Spanish Town, where the mix of islanders, yachties and travellers eating and drinking together creates a festive vibe. Rock Café and Coco Maya are standout options for dinner.

Day 4 — Tuesday

Leverick Bay & The North Sound

Sail up to Leverick Bay on Virgin Gorda’s northern side for a day of snorkelling, kayaking and paddleboarding, with easy access to the trails of Gorda Peak National Park. Hail a cab up to Hog Heaven for lunch, where the views across the entire North Sound are hard to beat. In the evening, moor up at tiny Saba Rock. Arrive in time for happy hour (4–6pm) to watch the daily tarpon feeding, then enjoy dinner at the Leverick Bay Resort with live music on the terrace.

Day 5 — Wednesday

Cane Garden Bay

Cane Garden Bay is a lively horseshoe-shaped anchorage lined with restaurants and shops, and home to some of Tortola’s most beautiful beaches. Explore the village behind the beach: stock up on provisions at Bobby’s Market, visit the family-owned 18th Century Callwood Rum Distillery, and watch recycled glass-blowing at the not-for-profit Green VI Glass Studio. If you’re feeling active, hike into Sage Mountain’s rainforest for the morning. Cane Garden Bay is a special place in the evening, when the westerly-facing beach provides a spectacular sunset over Jost Van Dyke. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from — Quito’s is famous for live music while Myett’s has a pretty setting and delicious conch fritters.

Day 6 — Thursday

Jost Van Dyke

A short sail takes you to the white sandy stretch of White Bay, where the aptly named Soggy Dollar Bar — named for the customers swimming ashore from their anchored boats — serves the Painkiller cocktail it invented. Further along the southern coast lie the Bubbly Pools, a natural jacuzzi of incoming surf when conditions are right. Anchor in bustling Great Harbour for the evening. Tucked down the far eastern side of the beach is the legendary Foxy’s, where thirsty sailors have been fed and watered for over forty years, and you might just catch revered owner Foxy Callwood strumming his guitar to delighted onlookers. Call ahead for a dinner reservation in high season.

Day 7 — Friday

Soper’s Hole & Tortola

Sail back toward Tortola on the final day of your charter, stopping at Soper’s Hole on the western tip of the island for an idyllic snorkel and swim in one of its gorgeous bays. The pastel waterfront is perfect for a last wander ashore, browsing boutiques and picking up something to take home. Return to base sandier, saltier, hardier and more sun-exposed than when you left — ready to head home armed with your sea-faring tales of adventure.
